Saturday, Sept. 8 Eve of Destruction
(West Salem, WI - August 11, 2012) - The Young Gun did it again; 20-year-old Cole Howland from La Crosse held off last years track champion J. Herbst to capture his second-career feature win in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division.
Pole-sitter John Olson was sent to the back of the field before the green flag waved, which put Howland in the top spot to start the race. Herbst was on his bumper in third.
On the start, Howland was able to open a gap as Herbst was fighting for the second spot with Nick Clements.
Herbst made quick work of Clements, then concentrated on closing the gap on the leader.
Meanwhile, a five-car battle was raging a few spots back.
Todd Korish was trying to hold onto the fourth spot with Shawn Pfaff, Brent Kirchner, Steve Carlson and Brad Powell hot on his trail.
Korish and Pfaff were eight points apart at the top of the points standings entering the night and Pfaff was doing everything he could to change that.
Pfaff was all over the back bumper of Korish looking high and low to make a move, but couldn't get past the points leader who now leads by nine.
With eight laps to go Herbst had closed the gap on Howland. The leader used the corners to shut the door on Herbst and take the checkered flag.
Herbst finished second, Korish third, Pfaff fourth and Carlson held on for fifth.
Things really heated up in the North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature tonight. Points leader Randy Humfeld and Rob Mason spun six laps in. On the restart Bill Martin jumped to the lead and never looked back. He held on through one more caution to win the race.
On lap seven Rob Curran and Jake Arneson made contact in the middle of Turns 3 and 4 before they went spinning to the infield, with Jerrod Loging, to bring out the second caution.
With four laps to go Greg Scheck was battling for the lead with Martin when Scheck made contact with Chand Wehling the two fell back avoiding a yellow flag.
Brian Hesselberg moved up to finish second, Humfeld moved back up to third, Scheck finished fourth and Wehling fifth.
Jason Bolster held off Dakota Miller and Jordan Myers, who are sitting second and first in points respectively, to capture the win in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature.
Miller finished second and Myers third.
The Volden Construction Outlawz were in action Saturday night and Jerry Aylsworth continues with an unblemished record for the season winning both the heat race and the feature.
The American Super Cup series came back for a second time this season for more hard-charging action. Ken Jones battled Cody Erdmann to take the top honors.
Next Saturday, Aug. 18 the Hornets will join our regular weekly divisions for a night full of excitement. And mark your calendars for Aug. 25, it's the final Buck Night of the Season. Join us for Late Model, Sportsmen and Thunderstox racing action while enjoying all the concession stand food and drink items for just $1.
