(West Salem, WI - July 14, 2012) - Brent Kirchner showed he wasn't going to sit by and let someone else easily walk away this season with the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model championship.
After qualifying fifth, Kirchner captured the Late Model feature win Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. He moved to second in the points standings, 13 points behind leader Todd Korish and one point ahead of Shawn Pfaff in third.
Adam Degenhardt started on the pole and led the pack for 13 laps until a caution came out for Bill Niles spinning in Turn 2.
Before that Degenhardt had opened up a five-car-length lead over Kirchner. But the caution brought the field back together and when the green flag waved again Kirchner pounced.
The two raced side by side for one lap before Kirchner passed Degenhardt on the outside to take over the top spot.
One lap later another caution came out when Troy Tuma spun in Turn 2. Kirchner was able to hold onto the lead while Degenhardt was in second.
Behind the two leaders Mike Carlson was in a heated battle with Korish.
Korish was all over the bumper of Carlson trying to take the third spot and secure his points lead.
Carlson was able to hold onto the third spot and Korish finished fourth in front of hard-charging Matthew Henderson.
Last week's feature winner Brad Powell was back in his own car this week and took home a sixth place finish.
Aaron Hass took a trip to Victory Lane in the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division, but it wasn't easy.
Hass survived two cautions and held off Rob Mason and Rick Schermerhorn to take first place.
"The Big One" happened just three laps into the feature when Branden Berg got loose in Turn 4. The entire field was struggling to hang on down the frontstretch and most did.
Brian Hesselberg wasn't as lucky.
Hesselberg spun and was sitting sideways in the straightaway when Randy Hass came out of Turn 4, and with nowhere to go, slammed into the side of Hesselberg.
Mark Challet, who also tried to avoid the carnage, spun as his back end smashed into the rear bumper of Randy Hass.
Hesselberg and Randy Hass' cars had to be pulled apart by the wreckers, with the front end was completely pulled off of Hesselberg's car.
On the restart, Aaron Hass took the lead away from Mason and started to pull away when Jamie Dummer spun on the backstretch with four laps to go.
Aaron Hass again pulled away on the restart as Rick Schermerhorn jumped five spots in three laps and was running down the leader.
But the checkered flag came out before Schermerhorn could catch Hass.
Schermerhorn took the second spot, Berg third, Mason fourth and Jerrod Loging fifth.
Jason Bolster overpowered Dan Rozek to capture the feature win in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox division.
Rozek led most of the way with Nathan White hot on his trail. With seven laps to go Bolster took over the third spot and caught up to the leaders to battle for the top spot.
One lap later Bolster was side by side with Rozek. The leader got loose and Bolster jumped into the first spot to take the checkered flag.
Adam Moore appeared out of nowhere to take the second spot in turn three of the last lap. Rozek finished third, White fourth and Dakota Miller fifth.
The Window World Hornets swarmed the track Saturday night. Davey Penel won the first feature after finishing second in the first Heat race. And JR Tourtellott took the second feature.
